Top 6 Cricket Batting Techniques & Tips

May 20, 2023 By Mahendar Prajapati Leave a Comment

It’s not new for cricket media to always have their cameras running to the batsman. It plays a crucial role in cricket and a team’s win. But there’s more than understanding what batting is and how you can have your style at it. While it’s true that you can have your own style when batting, it takes both skill and cricket batting technique to master it. Batting is an important aspect of scoring runs in cricket. While everyone has their own style, there are indisputable tips that give a good chance for a successful bat.

That’s why in this blog post, we’ll delve deep into how to improve your batting technique in cricket. If you’re ready, then let’s get batting!

Grip, Stance, and Footwork

Before getting into the complex techniques, it’s important you know the basic ones. Despite having played too many times, many players still get the proper grip, stance, and footwork wrong.

1. Grip –

The first is on the grip. This will help you focus your strength on the bat. If your bat grip is either too weak or strong, it might result in a wrong hit. There are different types of grip, including:

  • Neutral Grip – leaves allowance for the hand to move up or down.
  • V Grip – both hands form a “V” shape aligned with the bat.
  • Bottom Hand Dominant Grip – gripping the bat with your naturally dominant hand.

2. Stance

Next, let’s get into a stance. This helps you transfer weight to make your body more swift in the process. But how do you achieve the perfect stance? Here are the following tips:

  • Keep your feet shoulder-width apart.
  • Crouch your body slightly so you can transfer weight evenly.
  • Position your head over your front shoulder.

3. Footwork

Last but not least, to achieve the correct cricket batting technique is footwork. There are two types of footwork in batting:

  • Front Foot – step forward to meet the ball.
  • Back Foot – go backwards the crease.

If you want better timing and control, do a front foot. But if you’re playing shots in short-pitched deliveries, go with the back foot.

Cricket Batting Techniques –

After getting through the basic batting techniques in cricket, it’s time for you to know the more complicated ones. While they’re harder to do, you can practise them to master them.

1. Always Check your Backlift & Head Position –

Your backlift is your position before bowling the ball. Players like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli have a high backlift, so they’re great at making power and playing attacking shots. But for the likes of Alastair Cook, with a low backlift, they might want to be on the defensive side more.

2. Choosing Where to Shoot & Execute –

This requires you to analyse the field placements and whether the length is short or long. Then, you need to adjust accordingly to what you do best. For example, when facing a fast bowler, you can choose to play a cover drive to a ball pitched outside off stump. With that, you’re aiming to pierce the gap between the cover and the extra cove.

3. Timing & Placement are Key –

Batsmen should aim to find gaps in the field and place the ball where fielders are not positioned. For instance, playing a delicate late cut to a wide delivery between the slip fielders and gully can yield valuable runs without taking unnecessary risks.

And there you have it! These are some of the best cricket batting techniques out there! Remember, practice makes perfect, not just by knowing them. If you want more guides like this, check out cricketbio.com for more.
