Cricket is a sport that is popular in many countries, especially in England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Pakistan. It is a game that is played between two teams of eleven players each. Cricket is a complex sport with its own set of rules and terminology.

All of the cricket terms can be confusing for someone new to the sport. This article will explain some of the most common cricket terms or terminology in detail. Read this article to better understand cricket, and you will be able to follow the game more easily.

Main Cricket Terms/Terminology that Start with A

1. Appeal

An appeal in cricket is when a player of the fielding team asks that the umpire decides on
whether a batter is out or not out.

2. Arm Ball

In cricket, a delivery is known as an arm ball. It is a variant delivery delivered by a slow left-arm bowler or off-spin bowler. The finger spin is equal to the slider or zooter used by wrist spinners.

3. Ashes

A test cricket series that’s played between England and Australia is known as the Ashes. The first match of the test series was played in 1877. In total, there have been 72 Test matches played, with England winning 32 and Australia winning 34.

1. Batsman

A player who’s batting, particularly in the sport of cricket, is known as a BATSMAN.

2. Bowler

The definition of BOWLER is “one who bowls,” more specifically, “the cricket player who bowls and bowls a ball to the batsman.”

3. Bouncer

A bowler’s short delivery that causes a ball to rise up close to the batsman’s head.

4. Boundary

A boundary is a border that represents an edge of the cricket field. The distance between the wicket and the boundary can vary between different cricket grounds.

Main Terms/Terminology that Start with C

1. Catch

The act of catching, particularly the taking hold of a ball that has been kicked, batted or thrown before it has touched the ground.

2. Century

A batter scores a century when he or she scores 100 runs or more in a single inning.

3. Cover point

The position the bowler gives a field on the offside in front of the wicket is referred to as a “cover point.”

4. Chinaman

A left-arm spinner known as a “Chinaman bowler” uses his wrist to add spin to a ball while delivering it to a right-handed batter.

Terms Start with D

1. Drive

An energetic way to use the bat to hit the ball.

2. Dead ball

If a ball tosses more than once before reaching the crease or to be exact before reaching the batsman

3. Duck

When a batsman dismisses at zero, this is referred to as duck. A golden duck occurs when a batsman is out after facing just one ball.

4. Declaration

Declaration made by the batting side when they believe they have scored sufficient runs to win the game. A declaration can be made by a captain.

Terms Start with E

1. Extra

An extra is a run that is scored by or given to the batting team but is not given to any specific batsmen.

2. Edge

When the ball strikes the batsman’s outer part of the bat, it is known as the “edge.”

Terms Start with F

1. Fast bowler

A bowler who generally delivers the ball rapidly.

2. Full toss ball

Full toss is a delivery that doesn’t bounce on the pitch before reaching the batsman.

Terms Start with G

1. Googly Ball

The right-arm leg spin bowler’s style of delivery is referred to as a googly.

1. Hit wicket

A batsman being dismissed as a result of stepping or pushing over their own wicket.

Terms Start with L

1. Leg Bye Wicket (LBW)

The term “LBW” stands for “Leg Before Wicket,” and it refers to one of the methods used to dismiss a batsman in the sport of cricket.

2. Leg break

For a right-handed batsman, leg break and leg swing is a wrist bowling technique where the ball swings from the leg side to the off side.

1. Maiden over

Any over bowled by the bowlers in which there are no runs scored is added to the run total of the batting team.

Terms Start with N

1. No ball

A no ball is a delivery delivered by the bowler that is illegal.

Terms Start with O

1. ODI

The games will include one inning each side, with a limit of 50 six-ball overs per inning.

2. Off break

In the game of cricket, an off-spin bowler’s attacking delivery is known as a “off break.”

Terms Start with P

1. Powerplay

In a limited-overs cricket match, a number of overs with particularly specific fielding rules are referred to as the “powerplay.”

Other Important Cricket Terms/Terminology

  • Run out: It refers to a dismissal in which the batter has not made it to the ground when the ball hits the wicket.
  • Stumps: Stumps are the 3 vertical wood pieces used either at the end of the pitch.
  • Test match: In cricket, A match consists of 5 days known as a test match. Each day consist of 90 overs.
  • Twenty 20 match: A match consists of two innings between two teams. Each inning consists of 20 overs.
  • Wicketkeeper: A fielder who stands near to the wicket of the batsman and is usually wearing gloves and protective pads.
  • Wide ball: If the bowler’s ball completely misses even the batsman’s legs as it is broader than the batsman’s movement range.
  • Yorker: A delivery in cricket known as a “Yorker” that hits the ground around the batsman’s feet.
  • Zooter: A leg spin delivery from a leg-break bowler that does not bounce high off the pitch.
